Bike Shifting: What to Know Before You Book

4 Min Read Scratch-Free Transit

Bike and scooter shifting gets bundled into "just put it on the truck" by amateur movers far more often than it should. Whether you are an IT professional moving your Royal Enfield from Gomti Nagar to Bangalore, or a student sending your Activa back home, a two-wheeler has specific needs that are worth understanding before you hand over the keys.

01 The "Transport Nagar" Myth

Many people in Lucknow assume driving their bike down to Transport Nagar or Alambagh and negotiating directly with a truck driver is the cheapest and best way to transport it. It is actually the riskiest. Unverified trucks often squeeze bikes between heavy metal machinery without any packing, leading to massive scratches, broken indicators, and zero accountability upon delivery.

02 Wrapping vs. Wooden Crating

How your bike is packed determines how it arrives. Let's settle the debate between the two industry standards:

Multi-Layer Wrapping

  • Ideal for scooters and standard commuter bikes.
  • Foam padding on headlights, mirrors, and exhaust.
  • Highly cost-effective and faster to execute.
  • Perfectly safe for dedicated vehicle carriers.
Premium Choice

Wooden Crating

  • Essential for Superbikes, Vintage, or Heavy Cruisers.
  • Creates a physical wooden cage around the vehicle.
  • Protects against heavy impacts during long outstation transits.
  • Costs a bit more but offers 100% peace of mind.

03 The Fuel Tank and Battery Rules

Transport regulations strictly require the fuel tank to be empty before loading — usually down to a fraction of a litre. A full tank is a massive fire hazard in an enclosed truck. Keep this in mind and don't fill up right before your move. For electric two-wheelers (EVs), the main battery connection is typically disconnected to prevent accidental short circuits during transit.

04 Mirrors, Indicators, and Loose Parts

Side mirrors are the first casualties in a poorly planned move. Professional crews will fold them in or remove them entirely with a spanner and pack them separately. Loose accessories like phone mounts, saddlebags, and helmets should travel with you in your luggage, not strapped to the bike.

Protection Hack

Take 4 clear, well-lit photos of your bike from all four sides before it gets packed. It takes thirty seconds, proves the pre-moving condition, and gives you a simple reference point at delivery.

05 Mandatory Checkpost Documents

During interstate transport, commercial vehicles face RTO checkpoints. Do not pack the original papers inside the scooter's boot. Keep photocopies of your RC (Registration Certificate), Valid Insurance, and Pollution Certificate (PUC) handy. You may need to hand these copies to the transport supervisor before the truck leaves.
